How to Choose a Label Material That Survives Your Supply Chain
Label material failures are almost always predictable. Work through what the pack will physically experience between the press and the consumer, then choose the cheapest material that survives all of it. This guide gives the checklist and the common failure modes in Indian conditions.

Every label failure we investigate turns out to have been predictable. The adhesive was never rated for the temperature. The paper face met condensation. The film was applied to a surface with a low surface energy. In each case the information needed to prevent it existed before the job was printed, and nobody put it in the brief.
This is a method for getting it right, structured as a set of questions to answer before you request a quotation.
Step one: map the physical journey
Write down, in order, everything the labelled pack will experience. Be specific about temperatures and durations.
- Application. What is the container temperature at the moment the label goes on, and is the surface dry.
- Filling and processing. Hot fill, pasteurisation, retort, or ambient.
- Storage. How long, at what temperature, and at what humidity. A warehouse in coastal Gujarat is a different environment from one in Delhi.
- Transport. Sun exposure, vibration, stacking pressure.
- Retail. Chiller, freezer, open shelf, or outdoors.
- Consumer use. Bathroom humidity, kitchen oil, refrigeration, repeated handling.
- End of life. Landfill, recycling stream, or a refill and wash cycle.
Step two: choose the face material
Paper
Use paper when the pack stays dry for its entire life. It is the cheapest option, prints beautifully, and offers the widest range of tactile finishes, which is why premium wine and spirits often use textured paper deliberately. Paper is the wrong choice the moment moisture enters the picture, because a wet paper label tears, blisters and loses its printed surface.
BOPP film
Polypropylene film is the workhorse for anything that gets wet. It resists water, most oils and general handling, and it is available clear, white or metallised. Clear BOPP with a clear adhesive gives the no label look used across premium personal care. This is the default for home care and personal care.
Polyethylene film
Softer and more elastic than BOPP. The distinguishing property is that it flexes with the container instead of resisting it, so it does not wrinkle or pop off a squeezable pack. Specify PE for squeeze bottles, tubes and flexible containers.
PET film
The most durable common face. It tolerates heat, solvents, and years of outdoor exposure without embrittling. Use it for industrial and chemical packs, drums, lubricants and durable goods where the label has to remain legible for the life of the product.

Step three: choose the adhesive
The adhesive has to match three things at once: the container surface, the application temperature, and the end of life requirement.
- Surface energy. Glass and PET accept adhesive readily. Polyethylene and polypropylene containers, and anything with a silicone or wax coating, have low surface energy and need a high tack adhesive to bond at all.
- Surface texture. Recycled board, moulded fibre and textured containers present less contact area, which again calls for high tack.
- Application temperature. Standard adhesives need a reasonably warm, dry surface to flow and wet out. Below roughly five degrees they do not, which is why freezer grade adhesives exist.
- Moisture at application. A film of condensation prevents contact. Either dry the container before application or specify an adhesive formulated for damp surfaces.
- Product migration. Oils, essential oils and some surfactants migrate through films over time and attack the adhesive from behind. If the product is oily, say so, because it changes the adhesive specification.
- End of life. Refill and recycling programmes need a wash off adhesive that releases cleanly in caustic solution rather than shredding into the flake.
Step four: test before you commit
A competent supplier will provide sample labels on the proposed construction. Apply them to real containers, filled with real product, and run them through conditions that mimic the journey you mapped in step one.
- 01Apply to a production container under production conditions, including temperature and any moisture.
- 02Leave the samples for at least twenty four hours before judging adhesion, because most adhesives continue to build bond strength for a day or more.
- 03Run a humidity cycle. Room temperature to chiller and back, repeated, is the cheapest useful accelerated test.
- 04Abrade the printed surface with a dry cloth and again with a damp one to check ink and varnish durability.
- 05Expose a sample to direct sunlight for two weeks and compare colour against a stored control.
- 06If the product is oily or solvent based, wipe the label with the product itself.
Common failure modes and their causes

Bringing it together
Material selection is not about buying the most durable option available. It is about identifying the real stresses on the pack and buying just enough performance to survive them, because every step up in specification costs money on every unit you will ever produce.
